Our History

Founded in 1981 by Robert and Mary Elyn McNichols, CSM was initially organized to meet the need for hands-on, professional management for the nonprofit elderly housing being developed by CSM's affiliate, McNichols & Associates. The firm has steadily grown over the years, currently employing more than 1,500 persons and managing more than 26 distinct retirement communities.

One of CSM's first major projects was the opening of Trolinger House in 1982, a subsidized low income elderly apartment community located in Warm Hearth Village, Blacksburg, Virginia.  It was the start of many management and development projects for CSM.

In 2003, CSM was ranked for the first time as the 25th largest provider of assisted living services in the nonprofit sector by the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), now known as Argentum.

While the size of our organization has grown, our commitment to the original mission and guiding philosophy remains the same, ensuring the ongoing success of the communities we manage.
